Runs, walks and bike rides, despite requiring a lot of work and resources, can still be effective ways to raise money and bring people together in your community. If you’ve managed to create a signature fundraising event in this category with loyal participants who raise considerable funds for you, then you certainly want to keep it going. The trick is, how do you keep it growing?
We were honored when the Autism Society of Central Texas chose to move their annual bike ride and fun run to our platform and thrilled to see them embrace our new peer-to-peer approach and enjoy fantastic results.
“I was very pleased by our social media reach and how easy Great Feats made it for our supporters to register, recruit, solicit and share photos. The real-time gallery of photos and automatic updates to team members kept people engaged.” – Suzanne Potts, Executive Director
Here’s what helped them give their participants a better experience and raise 21% more:
1) Easier registration gave participants a great start.
You want to make the initial signup easy and give your participants confidence. Participants were able to register themselves and others in the same transaction. This was particularly helpful for this event, where many teams are families. Participants could also make an initial donation and purchase sign sponsorships, jerseys and raffle tickets all in one transaction. Finally, once registration was completed, participants were guided through setting their goal, adding a personal message and photo and had the option to get a quick tour of their fundraising page and new tools.
2) Social tools for recruiting and soliciting helped participants raise more.
Participants could link their Facebook and Twitter accounts to send direct invitations to others to join or donate. We saw a significant take rate on these direct and personal invitations, especially when they were sent in cohorts, such as co-workers, neighbors, friends, family members. Each time someone replied, the entire group saw the reply, which kept the event top of mind and provided additional motivation to donate.
3) Easy photo uploads and real-time gallery increased social sharing.
Participants enjoyed being able to easily upload photos from their computer, mobile phone, Facebook account and Instagram account. They were prompted to share them on social media and could instantly see them appear in the event’s photo gallery. Because our platform is designed for mobile, it was particularly easy for participants to share photos on the day of the event.
4) Raffle tickets, jerseys and sponsorships raised incremental funds.
Separate from the event sponsors who donated money and goods, a new sponsorship option was included in registration: the option for individuals and businesses to sponsor a sign along the bike route. The signs shared messages of encouragement and support, adding a memorable element to the event. Including raffle tickets, jerseys (left over from the previous year) and sponsorships as part of registration resulted in a higher take rate for these items than in the past.
Great Feats offers many other ways to boost an existing Run Walk Ride event, including:
- letting participants compete in fun mini-contests to keep them engaged after they register so they have something fun to do before the event
- letting participant create their own “wrap around” events, such as a dinner party, as an additional way to reach or exceed their fundraising goal
Our aim is to give your organization the freedom to design engaging events that give your participants a memorable experience and inspire them to keep coming back.
